Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal extension is the single TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level names remained active.
